about

Riding orchestral sweeps and swelling background harmonies, the song finds Kandle longing and alone this year, surprised by “the many ways the holidays can make a girl mourn” in her trademark treacle-dipped voice. “The only thing that can help folks like us to deal with the loneliness of a covid Christmas, is to attempt to write our very own Christmas classic,” Kandle explains. It was partly written as a tribute to holiday standards by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Bing Crob and Elvis Presley -- influences Kandle and co-writer Debra-Jean Creelman (founding member of Mother Mother) quickly realized they shared a love for while collaborating over Zoom in November.

lyrics

It got so cold today
My baby lives far away
Do I really have to keep myself warm?
I wasn't warned of the many ways the holidays can make a girl mourn

Underneath the mistletoe, I long for you and kiss my phone
I can't believe I'm all alone this year

You're in the sun, I'm in the snow
I try to send a video, and wait at my bedroom window for you to appear

Don't make me spend this christmas in tears

All the lights wrapped around my tree
Can't brighten up the dark in me
I wore your sweater out, it's tattered and torn
I wasn't warned of the many ways the holidays can make a girl mourn

Underneath the mistletoe, I long for you and kiss my phone
I can't believe I'm all alone this year

You're in the sun, I'm in the snow
I try to send a video, and wait at my bedroom window for you to appear

Don't make me spend this christmas in tears

Wrapped up in your arms
Underneath my evergreen
The only thing I wish for
The only thing I ever dream

Wrapped up in your arms
Underneath my evergreen
The only thing I wish for
The only thing I ever dream

I wasn't warned of the many ways the holidays can make a girl mourn

Kandle Montreal, Québec

Weaving a thrum of trip-hop downbeats, brilliant, gut wrenching lyrics, and her signature, sultry, haunting vocals, Kandle is back! She knows too well the darkness we all face, and with these songs she reaches out to all those who wish to be understood but feel they aren’t. Kandle can weave this magic so powerfully because she feels it too, she is out here in the darkness with us. ... more
